Reciprocating vs. Rotary

This type of engine is known as a reciprocating engine because of the movement of pistons in up and down direction.
In opposite to this engine is the rotary engine which utilizes a rotor that is in a triangular shape. The rotor is housed in a chamber of elliptical shape and attached to the crankshaft. With the movement of the rotor around the chamber, it draws an air/fuel mixture, compresses it, blisters and after that ejects it. Due to the movement of the rotor, the rotation of the main shaft occurs.
Gasoline vs. Diesel
